Mans fallen nature and an upright view of justice
The thought of hell is a difficult one to come to terms with. Why is it that people are so readily offended at the idea of an eternal Hell? From a biblical perspective, It is not because our view of justice is an accurate one; but rather the opposite. People are so offended at the thought of divine punishment that they reject Christ altogether because of the concept; saying things like "that's not my God, and "I could never love a God like that!" Mans view of justice, and the character of God (namely His holiness) is so warped that we often view the decrees of God to be equal with that of injustice. We've all struggled with the duration of hell, and it's severity. Not that we always state it with our tongue, but the mind is quick to point out what it does and doesn't like. We must remember that the God of the Bible will never do anything in contradiction to perfect justice. Because quite simply, He is the original pattern for it. Some men may receive mercy, and some may receive justice, but God will never show injustice to anyone. God is worthy of everything that we are, and failure to love Him with all our Heart, mind, soul, and strength (ie to break a single commandment) is injustice committed against an infinitely worthy, and good God. The fact that he sent His Son Jesus to receive our punishment of divine wrath is the greatest act of mercy the universe has ever seen, and it will never be surpassed. Nor will anything come close! The saints of God will spend all eternity searching out the vast riches of Gods glory. His unfathomable love will fill the hearts of His children, but in ages long past it will never be exhausted. His beauty will never be seen from all angles. You can hold a diamond in the light and see the reflection of it's beauty. The angles at which Gods glory can be seen are too numerous to number. It would be easier to count all the stars in the sky, and all the sand of the shores than to grasp the beauties that are to be revealed in the divine Godhead. The very nature of God will throw us into such ecstasy that unless we were supernaturally strengthened, we would be destroyed by our own joy. Our joy (and pleasure) while in heaven will be full in Christ, yet deepen for all eternity because we are finite. And when our heart seems ready to explode, God will expands it's capacity. Oh, the great riches in Christ to be revealed in that day, to the Sons of God!
